Working Man

Working Man

Garak

7 x 8 In, Charcoal Pencil on Art Again Paper, 2001. A Portrait from the Working Men series. $190.

"Garak" (played by Andrew Robinson) is a character from the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine television series. I liked him because he was complex: intelligent, witty, caustic, and self-deprecating. Character copyright belongs to Paramount Pictures.

A Good Day for Sailing

7.25 x 14.5 In, Pastel, 2001. A Portrait from the Working Men series. $160.

A captain squints into the early morning sun, measuring the sea swells and evaluating the weather. The cool breeze is stiff, but the snuggly warm sweater his wife knitted for him keeps the chill away. He takes a last look and calls to his crew: "All aboard!"

Purchase.

Bogie

10.75 x 15 In, Pastel, 2000. A Portrait from the Working Men series. Not for Sale.

This is a reproduction of a photo on the back of "The Casablanca Cookbook." It shows hard-boiled Humphrey Bogart in one of his most endearing poses. I love him in this moody black-and-white image, with his stance so guarded and his hat pulled down, but his eyes peering out of the gloominess with faint hope.

Ioan

11 x 16 In, Pastel, 2000. A Portrait from the Working Men series. $260.

The scruffy gentleman stares at the viewer with an unusual expression on his face. Is he annoyed? Or about to burst into laughter?

Purchase.

The Captain and his Officer

7.5 x 9.75 In, Pastel, 2000. A Portrait from the Working Men series. $110.

A captain of the British Navy and one of his Lieutenants, circa 1780. From the A&E presentation of "Horatio Hornblower": Captain Pellew (Robert Lindsay) & Horatio Hornblower (Ioan Griffud). All copyrights belong to their respective owners.

Purchase.

Medicine Man

8.75 x 5.75 In, Graphite on Parchment, 2000. A Portrait from the Working Men series. $95.

An old medicine man squints in the harsh sunlight of the desert. He has long since accepted his home's dry air and wild temperature swings. The heat relaxes his arthritic joints, and the nighttime coolness lets him sleep.
