Immune System King

5 x 7 In, Acrylic, 2002. An Illustration from the Birds series. $70.

I photographed this turkey vulture at the McBride Raptor Center in Coralville, Iowa. He, like the other residents there, had been injured and could not survive out in the wild. Yet behind the bars of his cage, he projected both dignity and a sense of humor that impressed me. I later learned a lot more about turkey vultures on the internet and in the library. I honor these birds.

Nuthatch

17 x 11 In, Pastel, 2000. A Figure from the Birds series. $195.

This clinging seed-eater crouches on an old dead branch, alert to the possibility of danger. Nuthatches are common in the Iowa woods where we live. They're quick, lively, noisy birds that run up and down tree trunks effortlessly.

Purchase.

Did You Hear the One About...?

19 x 13.5 In, Pastel, 2001. An Illustration from the Birds series. Not for sale.

Three colorful parrots relax high in the treetops. I like the way it looks as if one parrot is telling the other two a joke.
